Research looks at how oil, water mix in Gulf waters in spill aftermath

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Studying the turbulence in Gulf waters is helping researchers understand how oil and water mix in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico -- data that will come in handy during the aftermath of an oil spill. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student, Jonathan Zikos, a senior environmental chemistry student of Dr. Darek Bogucki, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences, has spent the summer working on the data collected in 2012 near the site of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which released nearly 4.4 MMbbl of crude oil into the Gulf in 2010.

Rift Energy commences 2D Seismic program on Block L19

Rift Energy  has commenced a 2D Seismic Program covering 680 line km on Block L19 in the Republic of Kenya. Data acquisition will take approximately 60 to 90 days, which will be followed by data processing and interpretation. Upon completion of the 2D Seismic Program, Rift Energy will have completed all of the minimum work requirements for the first two year exploration period under terms of the Block L19 Production Sharing Contract.

The 2D Seismic Program was designed to cover areas of interest resulting from an Aerial Gravity and Magnetic Survey (AGM) and a Geochemical Survey. Both surveys were completed during 2013 and yielded positive results.

The AGM formed the basis for a depth to basement map that identified multiple large basement structures and play types.

The Geochemical Survey resulted in indications of hydrocarbons over areas of interest identified by the AGM. As a result, the parameters of the 2D Seismic Program was designed to maximize the coverage of the identified areas of interest by these surveys.

BP ruling ‘wakeup call’ as risks mount in search for oil

NEW ORLEANS (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. judge’s watershed ruling means the final cost to BP Plc for the 2010 Gulf oil spill may eclipse $50 billion, wiping out years of profits and highlighting the risks of drilling as the industry pushes into more dangerous areas such as deeper waters and ice-bound Arctic fields. The Sept. 4 court decision that BP acted with gross negligence in the Gulf of Mexico disaster may hamstring the company financially as the industry’s search for resources becomes more expensive and dangerous. Companies including Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell Plc are also facing increasing pressure to show investors they can still grow as production declines.

‘Worst case’ BP ruling on Macondo means billions more in fines

NEW ORLEANS (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc faces billions more in potential penalties after a judge found it acted with gross negligence in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, dealing a blow to the company’s efforts to expand its drilling program as costs rise and production slips. In a turning point after four years of legal wrangling over responsibility, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier’s ruling laid the bulk of the blame on BP for the explosion, which killed 11 men and caused the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Acting with gross negligence means BP will be exposed to as much as $18 billion in additional government fines and penalties. The London-based company has spent more than $28 billion on the accident so far.
